Brian Gonzalez, 20, of Willowbrook Avenue, was arrested Jan. 30 after the woman managed to escape from Gonzalez and sought help from the Domestic Violence Counseling Center, said Stamford Police Sgt. Jennifer Lynch.

Gonzalez was charged with 68 counts of harassment, for calling and texting the woman in violation of a protective order, in addition to charges of assault, strangulation, endangerment, criminal mischief, threatening and unlawful restraint.

The protective order was issued in September after he assaulted the woman, Lynch said. However, he continued to use friend's phones, burner phones, and other means to constantly contact her, with police able to document at least 68 cases of violation, police said.

Gonzalez was able to briefly rekindle the relationship, and in January became violent when the woman accused him of cheating on her, police said.

During the attack, Gonzalez strangled, beat, kicked, punched and threatened to kill her, Lynch said. At one point the woman managed to escape to the bathroom, but she told officials Gonzalez kicked in the door and pulled her out. She was able to escape the next day when he left to attend a court date.

Lynch said the woman was originally fearful to file a statement and complaint but eventually did so.

Gonzalez is being held on $175,000 bond.
